Ask on WhatsAppAit Ben Haddou day trip itinerary
A typical 12-hour day, departing Marrakech at 07:00. Times are indicative and the driver will flex them to suit you.
Pickup in Marrakech
The earliest start of any trip we run, and it is not negotiable if you want to do this properly in a day.
Climbing the Tizi n'Tichka
The road switchbacks up to 2,205 m, the highest major mountain pass in North Africa. Viewpoints on the way up are worth stopping at.
Over the pass
The landscape changes completely on the southern side — greener valleys give way to red rock and pre-Saharan desert.
Ait Ben Haddou
The ksar, a fortified earthen village on the hillside above the Ounila river. UNESCO World Heritage since 1987.
Lunch
Terrace restaurants face the ksar across the river; your driver can suggest one.
Ouarzazate
About 30 km further on. Atlas Studios and the Taourirt Kasbah are the two things most visitors see. The studios open daily from about 08:30 until late afternoon, and admission is about 80 MAD with a guided tour (2026); check before you go.
Start back over the pass
The return climb is in afternoon light, which is the better direction for photographs.
Back in Marrakech
A twelve-hour day. Worth it, but do not plan anything for the evening.

The best day out, and the longest
This is the trip that rewards most and costs most in hours. Twelve of them, seven of which are in the car.
We are putting that first because the decision is a real one. Ait Ben Haddou is about 180 km from Marrakech, but the road crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka pass, and mountain kilometres are not motorway kilometres. Three and a half hours out, three and a half back, and a full afternoon in between.
If you can spare two days, do this as an overnight and carry on into the Draa valley or the Dades. If you have one day and you want the single most memorable thing within reach of Marrakech, this is it — but start at seven and plan nothing for the evening.
The pass is half the trip
Most day-trip pages treat the drive as the price you pay for the destination. On this route the drive is a destination.
The Tizi n’Tichka climbs to 2,205 metres and is the highest major mountain pass in North Africa. The road switchbacks up through Berber villages, walnut terraces and increasingly bare rock, with the valley dropping away below and the ridges stacking up behind. There are viewpoints on the way and it is worth stopping at one or two rather than pushing straight through.
Then you cross the top and the world changes. The northern side is green and farmed; the southern side is red, dry and enormous, opening toward the pre-Sahara. That transition, in the space of a few kilometres, is one of the most striking things in the country.
Two practical warnings. This is a proper mountain road with drops, hairpins and lorries, and it is not one to drive yourself on your first days in Morocco. And if anyone in your party gets motion sick, this is the route where it will happen — sit them in the front and take something beforehand.
Ait Ben Haddou
The ksar is a fortified village of earthen buildings stacked up a hillside above the Ounila river, built from rammed earth, straw and timber in the southern Moroccan tradition. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
What makes it extraordinary is not any single building but the whole silhouette — towers and walls the colour of the hill they stand on, rising in tiers to a granary at the summit. From across the river at the right time of day it looks less like architecture than geology.
You cross the river, usually on stepping stones or a low bridge depending on the water, and climb up through the lanes to the top. It takes twenty to thirty minutes at a steady pace on uneven ground. The reward at the granary is a view over the valley and back toward the mountains you came through.
The ksar itself is free to enter. Some houses inside charge about 20-50 MAD to look around, and you may be asked for a small fee at the river crossing. A local guide is optional; quoted prices run from about 50 MAD per person to about 100-150 MAD for an hour and a half (2026), so agree the price before you start.
A handful of families still live inside the walls. Most of the village moved across the river to the modern settlement decades ago, and part of the ksar is maintained for visitors and for filming. Knowing that in advance stops it feeling like a discovery you were supposed to make.
Ouarzazate
About thirty kilometres further on, and the usual second half of the day.
Ouarzazate is a modern town rather than a historic one, and its identity now is film. Atlas Studios is here, the surrounding desert has doubled for the ancient world in a long list of productions, and the industry is a significant local employer. The studios can be visited: they open daily from about half past eight until late afternoon or sunset, and admission is about 80 MAD including a guided tour (2026). Check the hours before you plan around them.
The Taourirt Kasbah in the town is the other main sight, a large earthen palace complex that gives a sense of how these structures worked at scale. It was damaged in the September 2023 earthquake, and admission and opening hours vary between sources, so check locally before counting on a visit.
Be realistic: Ouarzazate is interesting rather than beautiful. If the day is running late, it is the part to shorten. Ait Ben Haddou is the reason you came.
Who this suits
People who want one big thing rather than several small ones, and who do not mind a long day to get it.
Photographers, particularly in the late afternoon on the return crossing when the light on the southern slopes is at its best.
Anyone heading onward to the desert — this drive is the first leg of the route to Merzouga, and doing it as a day trip is a good way to decide whether you want the longer journey.
It suits badly: very young children, anyone who struggles with winding roads, and travellers on a short break who would rather have two relaxed days than one enormous one.
Practical things worth knowing
Start at seven. Not eight. The difference decides whether you see Ouarzazate at all.
Bring sun protection and water. The southern side is dry and the ksar has almost no shade; in summer the climb is genuinely hot work.
Check the pass in winter. Tizi n’Tichka often has snow from November to March, and the road closes during heavy snowfall, usually for a few hours to a day, as it did in January 2026. Check the road status before committing to a date: the Ministry of Equipment’s road information line is 05 37 71 17 17 (+212 5 37 71 17 17 from a foreign phone).
Our price covers the whole vehicle, the driver, fuel and a full day of waiting time — not a seat on a schedule. On a twelve-hour day with four people, that is where a private car stops being a luxury and starts being the sensible option.
Compare the fleet on our vehicles page, browse everything on the day trips hub, or see the price list. For a shorter mountain day, Imlil gets you into the High Atlas in an hour and a half.
Who this suits, and when to go
Easy — suitable for most people, no walking required beyond short strolls
Best months: Mar, Apr, Oct, Nov. The Tizi n'Tichka often has snow from November to March, and the road closes during heavy snowfall, usually for a few hours to a day, so check the road status before travelling in winter. Summer on the southern side is extremely hot — the ksar has little shade.

Questions people ask about this trip
- How far is Ait Ben Haddou from Marrakech?
- About 180 km, but the number understates it. The road crosses the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,205 m and the journey takes roughly three and a half hours each way. That is seven hours of driving on a day return, which is why we leave at seven in the morning.
- Is Ait Ben Haddou worth the long day?
- Of everything we run, this is the trip with the highest reward and the highest cost in hours. The ksar is genuinely extraordinary and the drive over the Atlas is one of the great roads in North Africa. But it is twelve hours and you will be tired. If you can spare two days and stay overnight in Ouarzazate or the Dades, do that instead.
- What actually is Ait Ben Haddou?
- A ksar — a fortified village of earthen buildings clustered on a hillside above the Ounila river, built from rammed earth and straw. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and is among the best surviving examples of southern Moroccan earthen architecture. A few families still live within the walls; most of the village has moved to the modern settlement across the river.
- Which films were shot there?
- The best documented are Lawrence of Arabia (1962), The Mummy (1999), Gladiator (2000) and Game of Thrones. Kingdom of Heaven (2005) and Prince of Persia (2010) are also reported to have filmed there. Babel and Aladdin were shot at Atlas Studios in Ouarzazate, not at the ksar.
- How hard is the walk up to the ksar?
- You cross the river — usually on stepping stones or a low bridge depending on water level — and then climb through the village to the granary at the top. It is a steady uphill on uneven ground and takes twenty to thirty minutes. There is very little shade, so in summer it is the heat rather than the gradient that makes it hard.
- Is the Tizi n'Tichka pass dangerous?
- It is a mountain road with switchbacks, drops and lorries, and it demands a driver who knows it. It is not a road to attempt yourself on your first day in Morocco. Travellers prone to motion sickness should sit in the front and take something before setting off — this is the route where that matters most.
- Can we continue to the desert from here?
- Yes, and many people do. Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate are the gateway to the Draa valley, the Dades gorge and eventually Merzouga. If the Sahara is where you are heading, this drive is the first leg of it rather than a day trip, and we would price it as a multi-day journey.
