Marrakech Menara airport transfer to your riad

Marrakech Menara airport is a few kilometres from the centre, yet this is the journey on which visitors most often feel they were taken for a ride. Here are the real options — the taxi rank, the bus, a booked transfer — what each involves, and why we recommend booking only in some cases.

The shortest journey, and the worst-remembered

Marrakech Menara airport is minutes from the centre. It is one of the best-placed airports in Morocco, and on paper this journey should cause no trouble at all.

In practice it is the moment of the trip when travellers most often feel cheated. Not because the sums are large — they are not — but because you arrive tired, with luggage, sometimes at night, into a queue where you have to negotiate a price you do not know, in a currency you do not yet have in your hand.

It is a bad moment to bargain, and everyone knows it.

Your options, honestly

The bus. City bus line 19 links the airport to the centre, stopping at the Hivernage, Jemaa el-Fna, Bab Doukkala, Gueliz and the train station. A one-way ticket is 30 MAD in 2026, buses run roughly every 30 minutes from early morning to late evening, and the ride takes about 20 to 30 minutes. It is by far the cheapest and it works perfectly if you travel light, by day, with no fixed schedule. Last departures vary, so check them before a late arrival. If that is you, take the bus: we have nothing better to offer.

The taxi rank. Always available, never booked. Taxis leaving the airport are sold at an official kiosk, at a fixed fare for each destination zone: since January 2024 these run from about 100 MAD for the nearest zone to about 160 MAD. In 2026 travellers report paying about 150 MAD by day and about 200 MAD at night to the medina or Gueliz. Check the fare posted at the kiosk for your destination before the bags go in, not after.

The booked transfer. A driver waits in arrivals with your name, the price is fixed before you leave home, and the vehicle matches the number of people and cases. That is what we do.

When booking is genuinely worth it

We would rather say it plainly: in a fair share of cases the taxi rank is more than enough, and we are not trying to talk you out of it.

Booking wins in four specific situations.

You arrive late. After a certain hour the rank thins out, the negotiating hardens and the appetite for it collapses. A driver who is waiting removes the problem entirely.

You have children. Nobody wants to discuss a fare with a four-year-old who has not slept. We have child seats: ask for one when you book and give the child’s age, so it is in the car at pickup.

You have bulky luggage. A surfboard, a bicycle, four large cases: they do not fit in a saloon, and finding that out at the kerb is a poor way to start. Declare them when you book. A board needs a larger vehicle than a sedan, and surfboards and oversized luggage carry a supplement, listed in our FAQ.

Your flight may be delayed. We follow the flight number and adjust the time. A taxi has no reason to.

Flight tracking, in practice

Give us your flight number when you book. We check the real landing time and the driver leaves accordingly.

That avoids two symmetrical problems: paying for waiting you did not cause, and walking into arrivals to find your driver has left. An early flight is handled as well as a late one.

How far the car goes

No vehicle enters the medina. The lanes are too narrow, and it is not a matter of which car.

We drop at the gate nearest your riad. Depending on the quarter that is Bab Doukkala, Bab Laksour, Bab Agnaou or another. Ask your riad which to give, and whether they send someone with a luggage cart: most do if they know the time.

For Gueliz, the Hivernage or the Palmeraie the question does not arise: we drop at the hotel door.

What the price includes

The price is the vehicle’s, not the seat’s. Four people pay what one pays, which is the opposite of a shared shuttle and explains why a private transfer starts to make sense from three people.

It includes the driver, fuel, airport parking and waiting time. Nothing is added on arrival.

If you are travelling on to another city, our intercity transfers compare the coach, the train where one exists, the grand taxi and a private car before recommending anything. For a day out of Marrakech, see the day trips, and for what each vehicle carries, the fleet.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from Marrakech airport to the centre?
Taxis leaving the airport are sold at an official kiosk, at a fixed fare for each destination zone. Since January 2024 those fares run from about 100 MAD for the nearest zone to about 160 MAD, and in 2026 travellers report paying about 150 MAD by day and about 200 MAD at night to the medina or Gueliz. Which zone your address falls in, and whether a night rate applies, is worth checking against the fare posted at the kiosk. It is that uncertainty, more than the size of the figure, that leads many travellers to book ahead.
How far is Menara airport from the centre of Marrakech?
Very close: about 6 km from Jemaa el-Fna and the medina, which is 10 to 25 minutes by car depending on traffic. Gueliz is about 7 km away, around 15 to 20 minutes. That makes Menara one of the best-placed airports in the country.
Will the driver wait if my flight is delayed?
Yes. Give us your flight number when you book: we follow the real arrival time and move the pickup. This is the main reason a booked transfer beats a taxi from the rank when you land late or on a flight prone to delays.
Is there a bus between the airport and the centre?
Yes. City bus line 19 links the airport with the centre, stopping at the Hivernage, Jemaa el-Fna, Bab Doukkala, Gueliz and the train station. A one-way ticket is 30 MAD in 2026, buses run roughly every 30 minutes from early morning to late evening, and the ride to the centre takes about 20 to 30 minutes. It is by far the cheapest option and works very well if you travel light, by day, with no fixed schedule. Last departures vary, so check them before a late arrival.
Can the driver drop me at the riad door?
Almost never, and that is not particular to us: the lanes of the medina are too narrow for a car. We drop at the nearest gate — Bab Doukkala, Bab Laksour, Bab Agnaou depending on the quarter — and many riads send someone with a luggage cart if you let them know.
How much luggage can I bring?
It depends on the vehicle. A saloon suits three people with reasonable luggage; beyond that you need a minivan. Give us the exact number of cases when you book rather than on arrival: it is the only way to send the right vehicle.
Do I need to book in advance?
Not necessarily. There are always taxis at Menara. Booking makes sense if you arrive at night, with children, with a lot of luggage, or if you simply would rather not negotiate after a flight. Otherwise, the rank works.
