Every way to make this journey

A private transfer is not the right answer for everyone on this route. Here is every option, what it costs and who each one actually suits.

Ways to travel from Marrakech to Essaouira, compared by price, duration, comfort and who each suits
OptionPriceDurationComfortWhen it makes sense
Coach (CTM / Supratours)About 80-120 MAD (2026)About 3 hComfortableIf you are travelling solo or as a pair with hand luggage and your day is flexible, take the coach. CTM and Supratours both run this route with reserved seats and a hold for bags, and the saving over a private car is large. This is the honest recommendation for most backpackers.
Train———There is no railway to Essaouira. ONCF does not serve the town, so anything advertised as a train is a train to Marrakech and a road transfer onward. Ignore it and choose between coach, grand taxi and a private car.
Grand taxiAbout 80-120 MAD a seat, 450-900 MAD for the whole car (2026)About 2 h 40-3 hBasicCheapest per seat if you are happy to wait. A shared grand taxi leaves when all six seats are sold, which can be minutes or an hour, and six adults in an estate car is a long way to sit. Cars leave mainly from the rank by Bab Doukkala bus station. Worth it if budget beats comfort and you have no fixed arrival time.
Private transferSee the price table belowAbout 2h 30 door to doorHighWorth the money when you have real luggage, small children, a flight to meet, or you want to stop on the way. You leave when you choose and arrive at your riad door rather than at the edge of the medina.

Why travellers choose a private transfer

Roughly 175 km separate Marrakech from Essaouira, and the drive takes about two and a half hours if you go straight there. That number is the whole reason this journey is worth a moment’s thought. It is short enough to do in a morning, and long enough that how you travel changes the shape of your day at the other end.

A private car earns its price in three situations. It is worth being blunt about them, because outside those three the coach is usually the better buy.

The first is luggage. A shared grand taxi is an estate car with six paying adults in it, and the boot is not large. If you are two people with two large cases, or a family with a pushchair, the cheap option stops being cheap the moment you cannot fit.

The second is timing. Coaches and shared taxis leave when the operator or the car is ready, not when you are. If you have a flight out of Marrakech, a riad check-in that closes, or small children whose good hour is between eight and eleven, a departure time you control is worth paying for.

The third is stopping. The road passes through argan country, and the cooperatives along it are one of the few genuinely interesting things you can do between the two cities. On a coach you watch them go past. In your own car you decide.

If none of those three apply to you, read the next section before you book anything.

When the coach is the better call

If you are travelling alone or as a pair, carrying hand luggage, and your afternoon is flexible, take the coach. CTM and Supratours both serve this route with reserved seats and a hold for bags. The saving against a private car is significant, the vehicles are comfortable enough for about three hours, and you gain nothing meaningful by paying more.

We would rather tell you that than sell you a car you do not need. Book a day ahead in high season. As a guide, third-party sites put the fare at about 80-120 MAD and the journey at about three hours (2026), but fares and timetables change: check both with the operator, on ctm.ma or supratours.ma, before you rely on them.

The grand taxi sits below the coach. It is the cheapest seat on the road and it leaves from a rank rather than a station. The catch is that a shared car goes when all six seats are sold, which might be five minutes or the better part of an hour, and six adults across two rows for 175 km is a genuinely uncomfortable way to spend a morning. Take it if the budget is tight and the clock does not matter.

What the drive is actually like

You leave Marrakech through the western edge of the city and drop onto open plain. For the first stretch the landscape is flat, dry farmland with the Atlas falling away behind you in the mirror. It is not dramatic, and that is fine, because the second half is where the road earns its reputation.

Somewhere past the halfway point the argan trees start. They are low, thorny and silver-green, they grow at this scale nowhere else in the world, and they are the reason for both the cooperatives and the goats. The country opens out, the light changes as you get closer to the Atlantic, and the last half hour is a gentle descent toward the coast.

Sea air arrives before Essaouira does. The wind that makes the town famous among surfers and kitesurfers is noticeable in the car with the windows down, and the temperature drops several degrees from what you left behind in Marrakech. Travellers regularly set off in a t-shirt and arrive looking for a jumper.

The argan stops, honestly

There are two kinds of argan stop on this road and they are not the same thing.

The genuine article is a women’s cooperative where oil is pressed on site. You can watch the nuts being cracked by hand, the process is explained, and the money stays local. Twenty minutes is enough, and the oil is worth buying if you were going to buy it anyway.

The other kind is a roadside shop with the same bottles at tourist prices and a commission arrangement with whoever brought you. Our drivers will take you to a cooperative if you ask and will not steer you into a shop. If a driver anywhere in Morocco is unusually keen on one particular stop, that is generally why.

The goats are real. Argan goats do climb into the branches to eat the fruit, and you will see them from the road. What is worth knowing is that some roadside spots keep animals in the trees all day so passing cars will stop for photographs, and will ask for a tip. A herd browsing on its own is both the better photograph and the better thing to encourage.

Travelling with children, boards or real luggage

Say what you are carrying when you book, not on the morning. A standard car takes a limited number of large cases, and a surfboard does not go in one at all. Getting the right vehicle sent is a two-line message; discovering the problem at the kerb with a child and a boardbag is a bad start to a holiday. Surfboards and oversized luggage carry a supplement, listed in our FAQ.

Child seats are available. Ask for one when you book and tell us the child’s age, so the seat is in the car when we pick you up.

Timing your arrival

Cars cannot enter the Essaouira medina. Every driver drops at the nearest gate, and from there it is a short walk or a porter with a handcart. If your riad is deep in the medina, ask them which gate to be dropped at and whether they will send someone to meet you. Most will.

If you are doing this as a day trip, leave early. Five hours in a car for one afternoon is a poor trade, and Essaouira is at its best in the last hours of daylight, once the day visitors have started back. If your schedule can absorb one night, it is the single change that most improves this trip.

Compare the fleet on our vehicles page, or see every route we price on the price list. If the coast is what you are after, Marrakech to Agadir is the longer, sunnier version of the same idea, and Marrakech to Casablanca is the one route where we will usually point you at the train instead.

What's on the way

  • Argan oil cooperatives - women-run presses along the road sell oil and show the pressing. The genuine cooperatives are worth twenty minutes; roadside shops selling the same bottles are not.
  • Goats in the argan trees - the animals really do climb, and you will see them. Some roadside spots keep goats in the branches for photographs and expect a tip, so look for a herd that is grazing rather than posed.
  • Sidi Kaouki - a wind-blown surf beach about 25 km south of Essaouira, roughly 25 minutes further on. Add it if you are staying a few days rather than passing through.

Practical notes

  • One price covers the whole car, not each seat. Four people pay what one pays.
  • Child seats are available. Ask for one when you book and give the child's age, so it is in the car at pickup.
  • Essaouira is windy almost year round. Bring a layer even in high summer.
  • Cars cannot enter the Essaouira medina. Drivers drop at the nearest gate and it is a short walk or a porter cart from there.
  • The Gnaoua and World Music Festival fills the town and the road in late June. The 2027 edition is announced for 24-26 June 2027 (festival-gnaoua.net), so book early if you are travelling then.

Questions people ask about this journey

How long does it take to drive from Marrakech to Essaouira?
About two and a half hours for the roughly 175 km, without stops. Allow three to three and a half hours if you want to look at the argan cooperatives or stop for lunch. CTM and Supratours coaches take about three hours, because they call at stops along the way.
Is there a train from Marrakech to Essaouira?
No. Essaouira has no railway station and no line runs to it. Every option is by road: coach, grand taxi, private transfer or self-drive. If a booking site offers you a train, it is selling you a train to Marrakech plus a road connection.
How much is a taxi from Marrakech to Essaouira?
A seat in a shared grand taxi is the cheapest way to travel: third-party sources put it at about 80-120 MAD, and the whole car at about 450-900 MAD (2026). Rates change, so treat those as a guide. A private transfer costs more and includes a fixed price, a booked departure time and door-to-door drop-off. Always agree the fare before the car moves.
Can I stop to see the goats in the argan trees?
Yes, and on a private transfer it costs you nothing but time - tell the driver at the start. Be aware that some roadside spots keep goats in the trees all day for photographs and will ask for a tip. A herd browsing on its own is the better sight and the better thing to support.
Is Essaouira worth a day trip, or should I stay overnight?
A day trip works: leave early, get four or five hours in the medina and on the beach, and be back in Marrakech for dinner. But five hours in the car for one afternoon is a lot, and Essaouira is at its best in the evening once the day visitors have gone. If your schedule allows one night, take it.
What is the road like?
Sealed, well used and mostly straightforward: the N8 the whole way, crossing open country and argan scrub with some gentle climbs. It is not a mountain pass, so travel sickness is far less of a problem than on the Atlas routes, but the last stretch can be windy.
Can you carry surfboards or large luggage?
Yes. Declare them when you book, with the exact luggage, so the right vehicle is sent - a standard car takes a limited number of cases, and a board needs a larger vehicle than a sedan. Surfboards and oversized luggage carry a supplement, listed in our FAQ.
